Despite our claims of progress and civilization, the fact is that stigmatization persists in the United States, hurting people's lives on a daily basis in both the public and private arenas. If we are honest with ourselves, we have all harbored unfavorable stereotypes about people who have been jailed, battle with addiction, live in low-income neighborhoods, have same-gender partnerships, or suffer from various illnesses.
