Verily all praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of ourselves and our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, no one can misguide him; and whomsoever He leads astray, none can guide him. Ash Shukr means "thanks only", done with all three faculties (heart, tongue & actions). It should not be done in calamities. 
It is the command of Allah.
فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ )
Therefore remember Me. I will remember you, and be grateful to Me and never be ungrateful to Me. (2:152)
