Dr. Hatem al-Haj's translation and commentary on Ibn Qudamah's Umdat Al-Fiqh is a major contribution to the study of Hanbali jurisprudence in the English language. Umdat al-Fiqh is an introductory Hanbali Fiqh manual that covers all major Fiqh subjects from ablution to worship to Zakat to marriage to divorce to inheritance to commercial sales to rules of evidence and everything in between. I believe this translation is the first and only English translation of Umdat al-Fiqh treatise. The translation is accurate and having the Arabic text next to the English is an amazing teaching tool for students and scholars alike. I found Dr. al-Haj's knowledgable jurist commentary spot on and very helpful and it complements the Arabic text. While Umdat al-Fiqh is a Hanbali work, students of fiqh of any school would benefit tremendously from studying this text. I will assign it to my students. I strongly recommend this new translation. It is a reference manual that should be in your library.
